He also serves as the Vice President of Jichi Medical University Hospital and the Director of the Endoscopy Center.

        He was born and raised in Kochi, Japan. He graduated from Jichi Medical University in 1984. He then underwent postgraduate clinical training in the Kochi Central Hospital from 1984 to 1986. After that training, he worked in underserved areas of Kochi Prefecture as a general practitioner to pay back his scholarship for medical school. He then moved to the United States to undergo clinical training at the Department of Gastroenterology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, and the Department of Medicine, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, Texas, from 1990 to 1993. After training in medicine in the United States, he returned to Japan and joined the Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology, at Jichi Medical University in 1995.
        He invented double-balloon endoscopy in 1998 and published the first report in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

        He is also one of the pioneers of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). He started ESD in 1998, and he is the first reporter of complete ESD cases in the stomach and colon.

        He presented his initial works at the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) Video Forums every year, for 8 years, starting in 1999. He has also published widely on gastrointestinal endoscopy.
        His achievements in endoscopy could not have been accomplished without dedicated support from his wife, Norie. She raised 3 sons while supporting her husband’s busy work. All of his sons followed in their father’s career: medicine. They also enjoy tennis, like their father. During vacation, the family plays tennis together.
        Dr Yamamoto worked as an associate editor of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy from 2005 to 2010. He was an associate editor of Digestive Endoscopy from 2012 to 2013 and a deputy editor-in-chief of the journal from 2013 to 2014.
        He currently serves as a Director of the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society, Chief of the International Committee of Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society, an International Editorial Board member of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and an Editorial Board member of Gut.
        He was honored with the ASGE International Service Award, the German Society of Gastroenterology Endoscopy Award, and the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society Award in 2015.
